What does climate change do to the ocean?
The ocean, the largest ecosystem in the world, is being destroyed everyday due to the increase of greenhouse gases. According to the International Union of Conservation of Nature, or the IUCN, the ocean is a big regulator of the Earth’s climate, and with the ocean heating that means the air does as well. In the ocean, depths up to 1,000m are being warmed because the ocean has absorbed 93 percent of the extra gases in the air. Imagine stacking 550 refrigerators on top of each other, that’s how far down the gases are getting into the ocean (The measure of things).
The sea level in the ocean is rising because of climate change. According to the Mass Audubon, an environmental conservation group, there are a few reasons that the sea level is rising, one of the reasons being melting glaciers. More and more glaciers are melting all around the world because of the rise in global temperatures. This might not seem like a big problem but as the water rises it makes it easier for places along the ocean to flood and increases the chance for more intense hurricanes. Another reason that the sea level is rising, is because of the rise in temperatures around the globe. When the water molecules are exposed to a great amount of heat, they expand. This pushes the water farther up the shores which is inching closer and closer to cities all around the world.
By the time 2100 the sea levels will have risen anywhere from 2.4 to 7.4 ft. Major cities all around the world will be underwater by the time 2100 comes along. A couple of them being in the US. CEO Magazine states that Shanghai, China will be underwater which will leave approximately 24.18 million people homeless. Another is New York City, New York this would leave 8.6 million people without homes. Venice, Italy is the second largest tourist attraction and is at risk of flooding which would leave 269,000 people without homes. There are so many more places that are a risk of flooding. However, let’s hope that before all of these places begin to flood we can put a stop to climate change.

How can we stop climate change?
No matter who you are or where you live, there is always something you could be doing to help stop climate change. Some of them are as easy as riding a bike to work if you live close by, or when you are brushing your teeth don’t let the water run the whole time, shut the water off when you are not using it. To make a change it doesn’t take an huge thing just to make a difference against climate change. However there are a few huge changes that we could adapt to in order to make our environment a better place.
A huge way to help decrease climate change would be switching to reusable energy and conserving energy whenever its possible. According to the David Suzuki Foundation of Nature, people all around the world are switching to solar panels as a way of electricity. It works just as well and it’s a whole lot cheaper. The website also stated that we should conserve as much energy as possible. If you have something plugged into an outlet but it’s not being used, unplug it because it will conserve a huge amount of energy. An example could be to unplug you phone charger when you are not using it.
Something just as simple as planting your own garden and eating fresh produce will help the environment a lot. By planting your own garden helpful gases are being released into the air. If more people start to plant their own garden those gases will overpower the bad gases and allow for a better atmosphere. Not to mention by eating fresh produce it will make everyone have a healthier lifestyle. All of these things are so simple and easy to do! It is going to take an effort from everyone to stop climate change. Please take into consideration that your families and friends are being affected by climate change just as much as you. Encourage people around you to take a stand against climate change, because together we can make a difference.
